Alaska's heat wave continued through Independence Day, and in Anchorage, the temperatures shattered an all-time record.

The temperature at the airport was 90 degrees Thursday, besting June 14, 1969, for the highest mark ever recorded in the city, according to the National Weather Service.

Across south Alaska, the mercury was expected to rise to record or near-record levels on the nation's 243rd birthday and continue at above-average levels through next week, the National Weather Service reports .

According to records kept by the National Weather Service (NWS), Alaska is no stranger to the 90s. In fact, way back on July 28, 1919, Fairbanks made a run at 100 when the mercury topped out at 99. Fairbanks has experienced 90-degree heat on several other occasions, most recently on Aug. 5, 1994, when it recorded a 93-degree temperature.

Other spots in Alaska have hit the 90s too, including McGrath, which had a 94-degree temperature as recently as June 17, 2013. Alaska has seen triple-digit heat at least once since record keeping began: In 1915, Fort Yukon, which is situated in central eastern Alaska, recorded a temperature of 100 degrees.

I don't think I'll panic just yet, it sounds like ...............weather.

Believe it or not, because of the 24hr sun parts of Alaska have a better growing season than we do down here in the PacNW.

My niece is spending part of the summer in Juneau. There have been some cold, wet days, and now there are some hot days. C'est la vie, it's all weather.

I believe it. I've heard of vegetable gardens in Alaska where the produce gets absolutely HUGE because of how much sunlight they get in the late spring and early summer.

The uninformed will blame global warming. The Meteorologist will point the finger at strong high pressure sitting just north of Anchorage drawing warm air currents from the south. A High that is slowly moving east, bringing Anchorage back to normal July temps.  Enjoy it while it last.

One day of 90 in the summertime in Alaska is global warming.

That's right. Add to that, that the way the mountains stay so cool is because of night - We will drop forty degrees at night in the summer time, here in the MT Rockies...

But without that night, the rocks of the mountains just keep heating up...

It's a funny thing, because it makes late spring and early summer their hot time of the year, whereas down here, our heat comes in August. By August, AK is far enough away from the solstice, that with their more oblique angle of sun, they are actually cooling off more than us.

The same with winter. While we generally enter winter at close to the same time, once they hit eternal night, it gets stupid cold up there, because we still get sun for 8 hours a day giving us some heat.
