'N. Korea Wants US Firms to Operate in Gaeseong Complex'

The chairman of South Korea's Gaeseong Industrial District Foundation said Friday that Pyongyang wants U.S. firms to operate in the inter-Korean Gaesong Industrial Complex.

Speaking at a news conference in Los Angeles after concluding a presentation on Washington's Capital Hill, Kim Jin-hyang said North Korea eventually wants U.S. firms to operate at the Gaesong complex, an inter-Korean venture located just north of the inter-Korean border that has been shuttered since 2016.

Kim said the North believes that the moment American firms enter the complex, war will be a thing of the past.

U.S. Surprises China with Evidence of N.Korean Smuggling
By Lee Kil-seong | June 13, 2019 13:01

Acting U.S. Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan took Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe off guard on June 1 by giving him a book of photos and satellite images of North Korean oil tankers involved in illegal ship-to-ship transfers, AP reported Wednesday.

Shanahan handed the book to Wei as a gift before they started talks in Singapore. As soon as Wei realized what was inside he hastily handed it over to an aide.

Each page carries captions with dates, locations and details of illegal ship-to-ship transfers, providing clear evidence that North Korea continues to violate international sanctions in waters off the Chinese coast.

The assassinated half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was particularly close to their once-powerful uncle Jang Song-thaek, according to a new book on North Korea.

Anna Fifield, the Washington Post's Beijing bureau chief, said at a promotional event for her new book "The Great Successor" in Washington on Wednesday that Kim Jong-nam maintained close ties to those at the highest echelons of the North Korean state throughout his time in quasi-exile.

She added that he remained particularly close to his uncle, Jang Song-thaek, the once-powerful political mentor of Kim Jong-un who was executed in 2013.

A lot of this from the book, "The Great Successor", such as saying that the half-brother was a CIA asset.

Jang Song-thaek wanted to bring economic change and was executed.
