Pope Francis compared the border wall going up between the U.S. and Mexico to the Berlin Wall built in 1961 to keep East Germans from escaping into West Berlin and freedom.

Asked by Mexican reporter Valentina Alazraki what he thought of the Trump wall and of children being separated from the parents at the border, the pope said that building the wall is a mistake.

“I do not know what is going on with this new culture that defends territories by building a wall,” the pope said in a lengthy Spanish-language interview published Tuesday by Vatican News. “We already dealt with one, the one in Berlin, which brought us enough headaches and enough suffering.”

I've made comparisons between the Berlin wall and the border barrier numerous times in this forum going back several years.

I speak from some experience -- I was at the Berlin Wall, and I went THROUGH the Berlin Wall to communist East Germany in 1971.

The Berlin Wall worked very well for its intended purpose. It kept people on one side from getting to the other side, with a near 100% success rate.

Yes, there were a few stories of those "getting across". But they made the news because there were so few successful attempts to breach it.

It's of no matter to me that Berlin's wall was constructed to keep people in, rather than keep them out. My observation was -- and is -- that it WORKED.

And that's why since 'way back in the 1990's I've been advocating a similar border barrier along the USA/Mexico border. Because more than any other "solution", a passive but formidable barrier would work, too.

Remember the mantra, "walls don't work"??
Well, I've got new for you, folks.
That's a lie. They do.
I've seen it in real life.
From both sides.

And that's why nothing less will save America from the future onslaught from the south.

Like you Fish, I was at the Berlin Wall and through East Germany in 1970.  It worked and served its purpose.

What we never hear about are the walls that separate Russia from some of its former statelites.  There are walls along the Russian border, and they too work to keep people out.  The wall in Israel works, as do walls around just about anything.

The fool in the Vatician is surrounded by a wall, and so it is a bit hypocritical for him to say anything.
