Trump recognizes Pride Month

By Brett Samuels  - 05/31/19 03:41 PM EDT

President Trump on Friday acknowledged Pride Month and praised the "outstanding contributions" of LGBT Americans.

In a pair of tweets, Trump expressed solidarity with people living in countries that criminalize and punish members of the LGBT community, prompting criticism from lawmakers and advocates who pointed to his own administration's policies.

"As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made to our great Nation, let us also stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison, or even execute individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation," Trump tweeted. "My Administration has launched a global campaign to decriminalize homosexuality and invite all nations to join us in this effort!"

If Gay Marriage didn't become Law of the Land, thanks to the Supreme Court,  Trump never would have gotten the nomination, because most likely he would have come out in support of gay marriage, which would have killed him with social conservatives.

But once the issue was taken off the table, Trump didn't have to address it.

Kellyanne Conway: Trump first president to take office 'approving of gay marriage'

by Steven Nelson

May 31, 2019 05:07 PM

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway touted President Trump's record on gay rights Friday, telling journalists Trump was the first president to take office as a supporter of legal same-sex marriage.

"I'm old enough to remember the 2008 campaign where Hillary and Obama were arguing with each other about who was more in favor of traditional marriage," Conway said on the White House driveway. "It wasn't so long ago. He is the first president to start as president approving of gay marriage."

Conway spoke moments after Trump published tweets urging other countries to decriminalize homosexuality, in recognition of June as gay pride month. That effort is led by the gay U.S. ambassador to Germany, Ric Grenell.

Some gay activist pointed out how the Trump admin also defended discrimination against gays, that one could constitutionally speaking, probably in reference to those beds and breakfasts, so it's not a real clear picture.
