At least nine killed in explosion amid protest in Colombia

BOGOTA (Reuters) - At least nine people were killed and four injured in an unexplained explosion on Thursday in an indigenous area in Colombia’s mountainous southwest, local authorities said.

The incident came on the 10th day of a blockade of the area’s major highway. Hundreds of members of indigenous groups have halted traffic on the roadway, demanding land titles and funding for social programs.

One policeman has been killed during the protest, which has caused shortages of gasoline and foodstuffs in some cities. Several vehicles have also been burned.

Colombian authorities are investigating whether the explosion that killed eight people on an indigenous reserve in the southwestern province of Valle del Cauca was caused by the mishandling of gunpowder, the defense ministry said Friday.

Let's hope this is all this was and not a malicious act. It says these people were on an 'indigenous reserve', that sounds a bit like a reservation where strangers probably couldn't make into very easily.  Sounds like no intentional bombing and that would be good. It sounds like the statements that this was during a protest may be wrong too. This may have happened in a house. See story.
