EEG test measures pain better than ‘smiley face’ scale

A new electroencephalography-based test could offer a better way for patients to rate their pain and could also ease the over-prescription of opioids, a new study shows.

If you’ve ever visited the emergency department with appendicitis, or you’re one of the 100 million US adults who suffer from chronic pain, you’re probably familiar with a row of numbered faces, with expressions from smiling to grimacing, used to indicate pain levels.

“Sadly, this scale of smiley faces, called the visual analogue scale, is the gold-standard pain-assessment tool.”

Despite that tool’s widespread use, a more empirical approach would better serve both patients and the physicians who provide care, some researchers say.

How much does an EEG cost compared to having the patient point at a row of faces?  I was recovering from surgery a few years back, and I was asked 3-5 times a day.  I wonder how much 3-5 EEGs a day would have cost?
For unvaccinated, we are looking at a winter of severe illness and death — if you’re unvaccinated — for themselves, their families, and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm. Sloe Joe Biteme 12/16

For patients covered by health insurance, typical out-of-pocket costs for an EEG would consist of a copay or coinsurance of 10%-50%. An EEG typically is covered by health insurance when medically necessary to diagnose or monitor a problem, or during surgery.
For patients not covered by health insurance, an EEG typically costs $200-$700 or more for a standard EEG -- or up to $3,000 or more if extended monitoring is required.

Since this is a new test it will probably be more expensive.

This would be useful for Research Hospitals.
