Russia 'fires on and seizes Ukraine ships'

Ukraine's navy says Russia has opened fire and seized three of its vessels off the coast of the annexed Crimea, in a major escalation of tensions.

It said two gunboats and a tug were captured by Russian special forces after a chase. Two Ukrainian crew members were injured.

Russia is yet to comment on the claims.

It earlier accused Ukraine of illegally entering Russian waters, blocking access to the Sea of Azov with a tanker put under a bridge in the Kerch Strait.

The boats of the Russian Border Guard Service opened fire on the ship group of the Ukrainian Navy, which was moving towards the exit from the Kerch Strait. About this in Facebook reports command of the Ukrainian Navy.

'After the exit from the 12-mile area, gunboats of the Border Guard of Russian Federal Security Service fired on the naval group of the Ukrainian Navy of Ukraine's Armed Forces. Berdyansk, the small armored gunboat took damage. The boat ceased to move, a man was wounded' the message says.

Earlier it became known that the Russian ships and boats began to escort a group of ships of the Ukrainian Navy and ultimately demand them to stop under the threat of weapons. There was information about the transfer of Russian special forces to the military ship in order to attempt boarding.

The alleged chlorine gassing in Syria which the Russians/Syrians blame on rebels and this incident makes it appear to me, Russia may be trying to mix it up some. Coincidentally, Putin is suffering in his popularity rating at the moment as well. Volatile situation.

Poroshenko urges parliament to approve martial law today after Russia attacks in Azov Sea

President Petro Poroshenko said he would appeal to the Ukrainian parliament on Nov. 26 to approve his declaration of martial law, which could lead to widespread compulsory military service, restrictions on media and public demonstrations and suspension of elections, among other measures. Andriy Parubiy, speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, said that parliament will convene at 4 p.m. on Nov. 26.

Germany says a "blockade" of this area is unacceptable. Also, Russia wants to take this matter to the UN I heard.  Lots in the news over this.

Again, in the US, it would be a good approval rating but Putin's approval is around 60%, it's fallen about 30% in the past several months.  So, this is a bit ominous.

FWIW, this map helps explain what this could be about. Since Russia annexed Crimea, it gives them overwhelming control between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. As you can see, that is somewhat crucial to Ukraine. I don't know about a broader affect.

There were people here in the recent past that have defended Putin and his strong arm tactics including the annexing of the Crimea and the invasion of Ukraine and almost word for word repeated the Russian propaganda as to why the actions were taken.

That's who that comment was aimed at.
