TheCortes Bank is located about 100 miles, due West from the California-Mexico border.
They departed from Dana Point Harbor, to reach the big surf. (location also prime fishing spot)

I surfed for years and the prospect of facing one of these freaks of nature 100 miles off the coast utterly terrifies me.
