Trump announces a ‘new phase’ in US-EU relationship, working toward ‘zero tariffs’
CNBC, Jul 25, 2018

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the United States and the European Union had launched a "new phase" in their relationship, saying that the two major economies would start negotiations immediately on a number of areas including working toward "zero tariffs" on industrial goods and further cooperation on energy issues.

"We agreed today first of all to work together towards zero tariffs, zero nontariff barriers and zero subsides for the non-auto industrial goods," Trump said Wednesday.

The announcement came during a joint press fconference in the White House Rose Garden with Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Juncker said the two leaders agreed that as long as negotiations were ongoing, "we'll hold off further tariffs and reassess existing tariffs on steel and aluminum" put in place by the Trump administration. "This was a good, constructive meeting," he added.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average popped more than half a percent to a session high Wednesday afternoon. The NASDAQ rose about 1 percent. The euro also rose, hitting a session high against the dollar.

Geez, I wonder if all the folks who lectured us about how bad the tariffs were and would cause a trade war are going to apologize now.

Do you think China is going to start getting concerned if we sell our soybeans to europe instead of them?

Do you think we might have some added leverage over Russia because europe will buy more LNG from us? All Russia has to export is natural resources and military weaponry.

Wow, and I was told Trump is Putin's apprentice. It sure doesn't seem like that.

Tariffs are bad and I think the president is using them to illustrate that fact to everyone.
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

I hope that's it.
He had me nervous with all that tariff talk.
I was thinking,"Doesn't he know that tariffs are not the way to go?"
It could have been that way all along, to show the pain they'd cause, both here and abroad.
Good for him.
If that was his intent all along, I'm happier today than I was yesterday, that's for sure.
If he starts that "tariffs are a good thing", I'll start cringing all over again, though.
As of now, sounds good to me.

I feel Trump has been consistent, from the beginning, that we need and he would get better deals.

NATO  funding. (US paying 70% of cost, for example)

Trade deals. He stated willingness to greatly reduce or eliminate tariffs, provided others did so.

I don't know, I thought the messages were a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest.
However, that being said, I like the negotiations starting.
Give the credit where the credit is due.
Let's hope it continues forward.

They were always a means to an end. If you don't threaten to use them, or actually begin using them, you have no leverage to negotiate a better trade deal. Trump has been spot on about trade and too many countries getting a free ride at our expense. What's not getting recognize is how smart he's been in getting our farm products  and LNG sold in Europe, this will create a lot of pressure on Russia and China to deal with us on our terms.

Couldn't agree more!   One domino falls then another and another...

If he's really serious about getting to a zero tariff state of trade affairs with the EU then he'll quit hiding behind the thin national security veil he's using right now and as that Congress draft legislation he can sign to reduce tariffs between the countries.

You know...do it the Constitutional way.

The Rats have fallen into a trap.   They are all about being "Anti-Trump" instead of presenting their case as to what they are for.

That's a recipe for electoral disaster.

Of Course, my first impulse was to post an image of a Red Meat and having said that, I'd still be apprehensive to give Trump credit for this thinking in my TDS, that he stumbled into this positive outcome instead, IF it even transpires.

@dfwgator to your point, if Trump keeps the House and adds a couple in the Senate this Midterm, against a strong Historic wind, I will give him all credit for that, including his twitter style.
No government in the 12,000 years of modern mankind history has led its people into anything but the history books with a simple lesson, don't let this happen to you.
