When fat, cholesterol, and calcium build up as plaque lining the blood vessels, you may develop clogged arteries, also known as atherosclerosis. Plaque can harden, narrowing the opening of the arteries, and cutting off vital blood supply to the body. Atherosclerosis leads to coronary heart disease (CHD), also called coronary artery disease (CAD).
According to the American Heart Association’s 2018 Heart Disease and Stroke Report, coronary heart disease accounts for 1 out of every 7 deaths in the United States, killing over 366,800 people a year.
It is the most common type of heart disease in the United States and currently the leading cause of death.
