The famous story from AA may apply. It is about the guy who gets to the 'making amends' phase of the program. He goes back to where he used to work and walks around from person to person that he had wronged somehow explaining how sorry he is and that he has changed. His coworkers were very impressed and receptive so they decide to throw a little lunch room celebration for him. Someone brought a cake and things were going great. The guy noticed that his former supervisor was not there so he decided to go see him and apologize to him personally.
He goes to his office and finds him there. The guy goes through a humble and sincere lengthy apology listing all the ways he had harmed his old boss and how sorry he was for each one.
The boss listened silently to the man's plea without saying a word. Eventually he spoke and he said,
"You were an A-hole then..., and you are an A-hole now. I think you are full of shit, ...and I do not like you. Now get the hell out my office!"
I would have a similar response to McCain, if he ever asked me to forgive him.
