Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon has struck a deal to speak with special counsel Robert Mueller and his team investigating Russia's meddling in the 2016 election.

Mr Bannon, who was recently disavowed by President Donald Trump, will discuss his time with the Trump campaign and White House directly with the investigators, and will bypass questioning in front of a grand jury.

Mr Mueller's team had secured a subpoena to compel Mr Bannon to testify, which could have forced him to speak with the grand jury.

FBI agents reportedly showed up at Mr Bannon's home in Washington, DC last week with the subpoena, only to find out that the former White House employee had secured the legal representation of William Burck hours earlier, according to reports.

Those agents then sent the subpoena they had intended on delivering to Mr Bannon to Mr Burck, who is also representing two other witnesses in Mr Mueller's probe.

The deal is to speak with Mueller instead of appearing in court.  What technical legal differences that may make, I don't know.  Someone here could perhaps explain it.

Their “reporting” is loaded with optative sentences, so I fixed the lead for them.  It’s Yahoo, what can you expect?

Actually, it’s The Independent UK.  Yahoo does have staff writers, but they’re mostly an aggregator.

Would he be under oath with Mueller? I assume he would be under oath testifying to a grand jury. If he won't be under oath with Mueller my guess is that is why he didn't want to testify in front of a GJ.

With Mueller involved in striking this 'deal' with Bannon, if I were Trump I'd be plenty nervous.  Mueller is out to bury him and Bannon and he aren't exactly on the best of terms.  Bannon may say what he's told to say so he doesn't wind up in the slammer.
Romans 12:16-21

Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly, do not claim to be wiser than you are.  Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all.  If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all…do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

He's already been told what he cannot say by the WH. I'm sure he was probably threatened with a lawsuit. Lewandowski was also told not to speak about his time in the WH after the election also and refused to talk to the Committee today. So I guess it all depends on what they are more afraid of. Being sued by Trump or going to jail. If they go to jail Trump can always pardon them.

We have no evidence that Mueller is telling interviewees what to say but we know its a fact that the WH has told them to not answer questions. Lawyers for both of them were on the phone with WH lawyers during questioning with WH attorneys telling them what not to answer. Both of them claimed "Executive Privilege" which is quite a stretch . So other than not liking Mueller because he is investigating Trump on what basis do you make the assumption that Mueller is telling witnesses what to say? It looks to me like the WH is doing its best to interfere in this investigation. It doesn't exactly make them look like they have nothing to hide.

Yeah, that's the way I read it.
