The perils of moving to London 450 years ago: Crossrail skeletons paint a bleak picture of a polluted and overcrowded capital where workers migrated from the country only to die young, painful deaths

Engineers working on Crossrail cut tunnels running through the heart of London
They history spanning a period of more than 55 million years in the process
More than 3,000 skeletons were found at the New Churchyard burial ground
Analysis found many belonged to people who had moved from rural areas
'Bad hygiene, pollution, foul water, poor waste disposal and exposure to "urban" diseases' led to their demise
