De-extinction probably isn’t worth it

The prospect of resurrecting mammoths is back in the news after Harvard geneticist George Church announced last month that he may be only two years away from creating a mammoth-elephant hybrid fetus. That’s still a long way from a living mammoth — let alone herds of the animals — and scientists are skeptical that Church will be successful with even a hybrid fetus. The scientific hurdles that will have to be overcome are huge.

Okay, let's say they do create a herd of these critters, that modern disease doesn't wipe them out right away. Then what? Where are they going to keep them? (And please, don't just up and drop them in flyover country. We have wolves and other critters to deal with already).

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

We call that vegetation "crops". Besides, they'd protect the d@mned things, and that's a lot of GMO meat to sneak off over night, and too big a hole for SSS.

I just know that I'm not going to get the tank of trilobites that I've always wanted.

They will likely use this to justify grabbing more private land for national wildlife reserves.

Maybe the greenies think they will charge electric cars with mammoth dung. Food to fuel, again...

Bring back the dodo bird.
Put 'em in suits and send 'em to Washington.
No one will know the difference!
