Colonial artifact found off Parris Island

A local commercial fisherman found a ceramic artifact off Parris Island that is believed to date back to the Spanish colonial settlement of the Port Royal area.

The Santa Elena Foundation announced the discovery this month along with a report released by Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island that describes the artifact and S.C. Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology efforts to preserve it.
