Cancer Deaths Higher in Rural America, CDC Reports
Agency head calls persistent geographic gap a 'significant public health problem'

THURSDAY, July 6, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Cancer death rates are declining overall in the United States, but they are higher and falling more slowly in rural America, a new federal government report shows.

"While geography alone can't predict your risk of cancer, it can impact prevention, diagnosis and treatment opportunities -- and that's a significant public health problem in the U.S.," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, acting director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Overall cancer rates were slightly lower in rural areas (442 cases per 100,000) than in urban areas (457 per 100,000). But rural America has higher rates of several cancers linked to tobacco use, including lung cancer, along with some that screening can prevent, such as colon and cervical cancers.
If this is so, I am curious as to what the other cancers are that city folk have that cause their overall cancer rate to be higher than a rural American's, and how that happens.

That is an interesting question.  Even with more preventable cancers, rural dwellers have lower rates.

I think Idaho scores last in states for early detection. I wonder how shifting demographics affect stats.

As a side note, in the small town my wife is from, the GP (doctor), the coroner/funeral home owner, the Ma Bell guy, and the veterinarian next door to us all died of weird brain cancers in the ten years I/we lived there.

Country folk don't go to Doctors.  They deal with pain.   So by the time they do...it is too late.

Too right. I have a problem with my lower right leg again. Another blood clot. I guess I better go see the doc.
