In most places if the Police Commissioner or Police Chief made a statement like that the mayor would have either fired him or accepted his resignation.

But sadly this is LA so....

It does present a tough choice.  I'd be in favor of defacing the star by burning down all the building around it.  That way it would stay in line with LA's preferred choice of protest tactics.
