Fights over Trump drive couples, especially millennials, to split up

by Paul Bedard | May 8, 2017, 8:12 AM

Couples are fighting over President Trump more than ever, and many are turning to divorce court to get out of their politically ravaged marriages.

New data from Wakefield Research found that one in 10 couples, married and not, have ended their relationships in a battle over political differences. For younger millennials, it's 22 percent.

And nearly one in three Americans said that political clashes over Trump have "had a negative impact on their relationship," said the report provided to Secrets.

"Since Donald Trump's election, political discourse in the U.S. has been more tense and divisive than ever," Wakefield said.

Call it the end of the Carville-Matalin era, when relationships like Clinton adviser James Carville's marriage to Bush family adviser Mary Matalin were celebrated.

"Passionately opposing points of views are not only driving wedges between strangers and even friends, but we are now seeing evidence that this dissent is having a detrimental impact on Americans' marriages and relationships," the report said.

In fact, 24 percent of Americans in a relationship or married and 42 percent of millennials told the survey that "since President Trump was elected, they and their partner have disagreed or argued about politics more than ever."

Two unrelated online dating reports confirmed the rise of political incompatibility. They showed that Democrats are especially unlikely to date a Trump-supporting Republican, but Republicans are more inclined to give Clinton-supporting Democrats a try.

Trumpers, as a whole, to propagate their species are obviously hornier than Democrats.

Before retirement, I had a number of millennials on staff.  My observations

(1) Feels entitled
(2) Wants /needs praise for the even the smallest accomplishment
(3) Works more with their thumbs on a smart device than using the smart device on their head.
(4) Get an entire whole day of work????  Ha ha
(5) Lack of desire to go above and beyond on a project.  Works harder to find a short cut than to do the work themselves.

What happened?
I display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my great great great grandfathers who spilled blood at Wilson's Creek and Shiloh.  5 others served in the WBTS with honor too.

If this causes divorce, you shouldn't have gotten together in the first place. People are vapid.

You can add #6. Too stupid to operate a computer because they only know how tablets work. You may as well forget about typing as well unless it is with thumbs.

You left out overly sensitive. I commented one on a great pair of shoes once (they were) the next thing I knew I was in HR with a complaint launched against me because of the compliment.

I got a lecture that I shouldn't try to befriend them and just ignore them. And the complaint was tossed away. They apparently made a lot of superfluous work for HR. After that I only talked to people around my age group or older.

"Trump voters need not apply."

In regard to online dating, that is a phrase and sentiment i come across quite often. Now I didn't support him but it is still intimidating to any conservative. Single conservative women are hard to find.

Ashley Madison is pretty loose about party affiliations.......or so I'm told.

Not at all surprised. Politics are getting more ugly and divisive by the day. I'm also not surprised that democrats are far less likely to date Trump supporters than vice versa. Pretty much all lines of research have shown democrats to be far more intolerant of opposing views than republicans.

The mediocre mind is incapable of understanding the man who refuses to bow blindly
to conventional prejudices and chooses instead to express his opinions courageously and honestly."

My son and his wife are divorcing over the election.

Spouse #1.

1.  Won't allow four year old to play outside as there are bacteria, bugs, and allergens that spouse 1 believes will make grandson sick.
2.  Self-diagnosed grandson with Celiac Disease.
3.  Self-diagnosed grandson as Autistic.
4.  Has a masters degree in Psychology.
5.  Works as a teacher.
6.  Wants grandson to start taking ADHD meds.
7.  Doesn't trust the spouse to be alone with grandson as spouse might play with grandson outside on the dangerous play gym Spouse 1 had put in the backyard.
8.  Believes Spouse #2 should do all housecleaning as Spouse 1 dislikes housecleaning.
9.  Changed bank account password constantly to keep Spouse 2 from knowing account balance as Spouse 1 declared that Spouse 2 doesn't have a need to know until Spouse 2 threatened to get own bank account separate from Spouse 1.
10. Drives a new vehicle every year.

Spouse #2

1.  Goes in to work at 4 am to beat the traffic to ensure timely arrival and stays late to finish the job when necessary.
2.  Has a 2 year degree in a trade that makes decent money.
3.  Prefers a clean environment inside and actually does the cleaning, laundry, etc...  Cooks dinner every evening after arriving home.
4.  Believes fresh air is good for child as child has never been diagnosed by a professional as having any of the diseases Spouse 1 believes him to have.
5.  Drives a beater so that Spouse 1 can have new vehicle.
6.  Spends time with grandson every night teaching him as Spouse 2 is exhausted from teaching other children all day and needs to get to sleep early to get to work at 8am.

There's tons more of course that would make it blatantly obvious such as supports BLM and the other has guns in a gun safe, but these are just the highlights.  Trump finally broke that marriage camel's back as one spouse cannot stand the fact that the other voted Trump.  The Trump spouse has been wanting out of the marriage for years, but has stayed for the child's sake.  Guess who is who.  Obvious, isn't it?
