You used the e word.  That'll be $500

Ah, but you don't know if I have a license or not.

Remember, you could be licensed in Timbuktu and still be able to call yourself a real engineer.

To be clear, it has never been my experience.  I have never seen that enforced.  It is only my understanding of what the law reads, and discussion among many engineers I've worked with.

I've never seen it enforced either.  But a few years ago the contractor I worked for, came through and made all non PEs remove the term "engineer" from our business cards and other official professional representations.  And warned us not to call ourselves engineers unless we had our PE.

That's when I started saying "degree in mechanical engineering."  It's the simple truth, and I didn't call myself an "engineer."  I just don't want to get sued/fined.

Considering the profession of engineering involves more than a degree (fundamentals of engineering is only one portion of the board exams, not to mention the other requirements for licensure), that's reasonable.  I was a "geological scientist" before getting a P.G. license.

I've seen it enforced.  Usually a fine of a few hundred dollars.

Basically all states have this type of law on their books.  Enforcement varies.
He was not working for pecuniary compensation. This was not gainful employ, but an individual pursuit. Had he not mentioned qualifications which have not been registered with and approved by the State, he would have been fine, and ironically, his results would have been something he could have published at will.

I am a licensed, registered Professional Geologist in the one State where I am likely to work that requires it. I have noticed how the laws there have become more intense for those who are not already in the club, so to speak. Every year I pay to renew that license whether or not I use it, because being reinstated should I need to do so would be prohibitively time consuming and expensive.

And just one word of warning.  I'm seeing more violations of Continuing Education credits in recent years.

Yeah, I forgot about that one, but you are right. I do them, but I consider the CE requirements another exercise in cronyism.

It's interesting that we have so many engineers here.

They like to hang out with cool people.

No, the cool people like to hang out with Engineers. We can fix stuff, and are very knowledgeable. Minds like steel mouse traps, except that some of us need to let a few of those poor mice go........   :tongue2:

In the case of an engineer its probably a good thing to have a law assuring that we get an engineer. A manicurist or a house painter not so much.

Cisco Systems (the internet equipment company) at one time, called their top certification "Cisco Certified Network Engineer".  Do to the problems with these types of laws, they changed Engineer to Expert.

I'm only a poor cabinetmaker who is hoping to hang out with the people who hang out with the cool people.

All I know about those engineering things like physics, chemistry, statics and dynamics, calculus...are from books and perfessers I had when I was in college.  :tongue2:

I am pretty good at craftitizing things although I may have a tendency towards sesquipedalianisms but is that really an inadequaciousness?

Is that how engineers think? When they get up in the morning they put their pants and boots on at the same time? How cool is that? I'm stuck with putting on my pants and then my boots. One at a time.

Nope, pants on before boots. I just tuck the bottom of the pants into the boots when the BS levels get too high. I guess it's my farmboy childhood rearing it's head again.......
