 President Trump did not understand that the US cannot negotiate a trade deal with Germany alone and must deal with the European Union as a bloc, a senior German official told The Times of London.

"Ten times Trump asked [German chancellor Angela Merkel] if he could negotiate a trade deal with Germany. Every time she replied, 'You can’t do a trade deal with Germany, only the EU,'" the official said.

This does not ring true. Something is missing.

Germany hasn't trade deals with China? Those deals are with the entire EU bloc?

Germany is the heart and soul of the EU.  From Chinese people's point of view, Germany is the EU. IMO

And Trump had to explain to Merkel a thousand times that allowing Muslim fanatics to invade your country under the premise of humanitarian multiculturalism will do nothing good for you. It will only empty your treasury, get your women raped, and your citizens killed.

An interesting thing is that the source cited is a piece titled: Trump puts EU ahead of Britain in trade queue

Unless they are old arrangements that were grandfathered, they would be either with the European Free Trade Association or the EU.  However, a quick check (it is Wikipedia so take it with a grain of salt and verify), China currently doesn't have a bilateral trade agreement with either. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bilateral_free-trade_agreements#China
