BREAKING NEWS: Pipe Bomb explodes on route of charity 5k run for military: Thousands of runners evacuated from Jersey Shore after explosion inside trash can — and there 'may be a second device'

- Authorities say pipe bomb exploded shortly before the Semper Five Run at Seaside Park, New Jersey
- The bomb was in a garbage can when it exploded, leaving no injuries
- The race, which is a 5K to benefit marines and sailors, was canceled because of the blast

A pipe bomb exploded in a Jersey Shore town shortly before thousands of runners were due to take part in a charity 5K race to benefit marines and sailors, authorities said.

No injuries were reported in the blast in Seaside Park, which occurred around 9:30am Saturday.

But officials are now following up on reports of a second device in the area.

A bomb has exploded in Seaside Park in New Jersey before planned 5km race, a prosecutor and local media said Saturday. The authorities in New Jersey are evacuation about 30 homes near the site of explosion. An improvised explosive device exploded on Saturday morning in Seaside Park, New Jersey, along the route of a major charity race that was expected to involve some 5,000 athletes, according to the local prosecutor's office. "An explosive device discharged within a garbage pail… at approximately 9:35 am [13:35 GMT]. There are no reported injuries or damage to surrounding structures. The Ocean County Prosecutors Office Arson Unit is on scene and will be assisted by FBI, ATF and NJ State Police Bomb Squad," the office said in a statement.

Btw, the event was the Semper Fi  5k run today.

I'll put the URL below. The idea of anyone hurting Marines....makes me want to vomit. I respect these brave men.

Why can't congress pass a law that when someone is killed or injured by one of Obama's "resettled" refuges .. Obama will be charged??

I don't know that giving aid and comfort applies to someone like obama who is the enemy too.

SEASIDE PARK — Federal authorities have joined the investigation into the Saturday morning bombing on a residential street that was set to be used as a route for a military charity race.

Nobody was injured in the explosion, which was contained in a plastic trash can on the curb of the intersection of D Street and Ocean Avenue.

Authorities quickly ruled out a prank or an accident, however, after they reportedly discovered two more undetonated shrapnel devices connected to the exploded device. The timing of the explosion and its failure to completely detonate prevented further property damage or injuries, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said.

The state Attorney General’s Office did not confirm the report of the additional undetonated devices, but said no other explosives were found elsewhere in the borough.

The explosion occurred about 9:30 a.m. just as 3,000 of runners and spectators were queuing up for the 5K Semper Five run to support Marine and sailor veterans and families.

The explosion blew holes through the trash can and sent up a plume of smoke, witnesses said.

The FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives were on the scene with the State Police and local and county authorities.

Gov. Chris Christie was briefed on the incident and the New York City Police Counterterroism Bureau said it was “closely monitoring” developments.

“We are grateful that nobody was injured, but this is a serious act of violence against the people of New Jersey,” Attorney General Christopher Porrino said Saturday afternoon. “We will not rest until we find the person or persons responsible.”

Authorities said they do not have any suspects.

The borough was placed on lockdown, several blocks near the explosion were evacuated and the event was canceled. Other garbage cans were searched but nothing more was found, including in an unattended backpack found near the explosion.

Other Jersey Shore towns beefed up police presence as a result of the explosion.

Porrino urged anyone with information to call the State Police Homeland Security Tipline at 1-866-4SAFENJ.
