There's that word again...

Kasich: Delegates should search their consciences before voting in Cleveland

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R), who has declined to endorse Donald Trump for president, said Tuesday that the delegates to the party’s national convention should search their own consciences and decide whether to support the presumptive nominee when they meet in Cleveland in two weeks.

Kasich, like other rivals of Trump, pledged to support the party’s nominee while he was a candidate for the Republican nomination. But he has not lived up to that commitment and shows no sign of doing so. Asked whether delegates to the convention, including those bound to Trump or others by the results of primaries and caucuses, should honor those rules if Kasich is not living up to his pledge, he said it is up to them to decide.

“They have to weigh their responsibilities against their consciences and then make a decision about what they want to do,” he said.

Though some delegates have been looking for ways to challenge the results of the nominating process, Kasich was quick to say he was not trying to lead a convention revolt. “I will not and do not want to be a disruptive force,” he said. “Donald Trump won. It’s his party and his convention.”

...

Kasich is one of a number of prominent holdouts ahead of the convention, but his position is magnified by his role as host governor for the Cleveland gathering. He said he plans to be in Cleveland during convention week but has no plans for participation in the convention itself.

Asked directly if he is likely to back Trump before the convention, he said, “Probably not. Unless I see a Saul-to-Paul transformation on the road to Damascus, I don’t see it happening. . . . I may still support him, but I’m going to have to see changes.”

The governor is at odds with Trump on issues ranging from immigration to trade to entitlement reform to the country’s national security posture.

Who cares what a Democrat says?

This is the smartest thing I've heard out of Kasich in years.

He should have dropped out after finishing 3rd in Michigan where he should have done considerably better. I was amazed that he seemed to be running on the fact that he was in government for a long time.

Folks should care about what Kasich says, because the latest polling continues to confirm that Kasich would handily beat Clinton, while Trump will lose.

A lot is riding on this election.  It's imperative to give Trump the heave-ho.   It's the only way to defeat Clinton.

Your insinuations regarding my integrity are not appreciated, Mech.   Zealously defend your fascist clown if you must,  but don't suggest I'm dishonest by citing "fake" polls.

Ok then stop claiming online polls like Reuters Ispo are legit. Stop claiming NBCWSJ polls are even polls, Stop Claiming Nate Silver has any creditability this election, etc. As long as you knowingly use such Bogus manufactured authorities to support your arguments you will get called out on it.

Don't like it, stop using such obvious frauds.

So what polls are we allowed to cite?     Poll after poll after poll after poll after poll show the same thing - Trump loses (and Kasich wins).   It is the weight of such polling that comes closest to the truth.

It's surprising who says what sometimes; I agree with Kasich too!
America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being's entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign. -Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta

Why do you need polls to tell you what to think? Is your beliefs so weak you need polls made by immoral/dishonest people to validate them for you?

We have delegates for a reason and its not to be a rubber stamp, its to make a final decision.

Assume a candidate clinches the nomination but is caught dead to rights committing a major felony before the convention. Are delegates supposed to vote for someone they know will lose or go to prison because of it? Fortunately the delegates don't need that extreme of a reason. They can and should vote against a candidate who clearly doesn't adhere to the party platform.

There were delegates at the 2nd continental congress who voted for independence against the will of the people they represented. Lyman Hall voted no to independence but returned and changed his vote while quoting Edmund Burke. Family history has it (He's an ancestor) that he took a ride in the country and noted that the local loyalist aristocracy were living high on the hog while the generally poorer patriot farmers and shopkeepers were being driven to poverty by excessive regulation and taxation (not to mention growing brutality at the hands of the soldiers due to their resistance). The British with the help of local loyalists promptly burned his house down but he was eventually elected Governor of Georgia.

(snip)
Delegates are not voters, they are agents of the principles they agreed in writing to represent their directives. Delegates have no legal authority to act against their principle because they have only delegated authority none on their own.
