Katie Walsh, the Republican National Committee’s chief of staff, was just a few hours from meeting with Donald Trump’s new political director this week when the television outside her office blared the latest news breaking out of the Trump orbit. “Christie defends Trump: He’s not a racist,” the CNN headline declared.

The scene illustrates the tricky task facing the party, which is serving as the main engine behind Trump’s presidential bid: How do you a run a disciplined campaign for a candidate who is anything but?

“He’s the nominee and he’s going to make sure his views are known,” Walsh said carefully during an interview. “He’s made that pretty clear. We will leave it to Mr. Trump to speak for Mr. Trump . . . And we will keep hitting Hillary and raising money to be ready for November.”

That's gotta be a good feeling for Trump.  Knowing his campaign is being run by the morons who he lambasted for a year.

The RNC has a difficult tightrope to walk, but it can be done.

What they have to do is focus on criticizing Hillary, and making Trump responsible for promoting himself.  Because ads that attack Hillary, and what the Democrats will do if they regain control, can also help Congressional Republicans.  And if it gets close to the election and Trump is looking to get clobbered, the GOP can play the "if you don't want Hillary to have total control over the entire country, you'd better elect Republicans to keep her in check" card.

More importantly, this is a good indication of how a Trump presidency would be run -- slapdash statements and half-assed walkbacks in service of reactions to short-term events, with no attention to or interest in long-term plans or strategies.

Obama is bad enough about such things; Trump would be even worse.

What a mess.

Trump is running one campaign, the RNC is running another.  Doesn't appear that there'll be much coordination.

Katie, I'm betting you ain't gonna have much success getting people to dig the change from between their sofa cushions for a billionaire.

Especially since Trump is so intent of maintaining his image as a multi-billionaire that he won't get out there and aggressive ask people to send him money.  So a whole lot of people who aren't political junkies, and who think of him as "this great guy who said he is going to finance his own campaign", won't even realize he really needs their money.  He's kind of boxed himself in on that.

It is going to hurt key Senate races and house races...

Trump will let the RNC fund his campaign, the down-ballot candidates won't see much $ help. Trump won't even have his own volunteers and stuff. He's going to suck the RNC dry.

He might not even bother campaigning much, maybe he'll just stay home most of the time.
