Trump: Vince Foster shouldn’t be a campaign issue
By Jonathan Easley
Donald Trump on Thursday denied having any knowledge about the events surrounding the 1993 suicide of a top aide to then-President Clinton, and said it shouldn’t be a campaign issue going forward.
The presumptive GOP presidential nominee has been under fire for saying earlier this week that there was something “very fishy” about the death of Vince Foster.
Top Democrats have rebuked Trump for conspiracy mongering, and CNN anchor Jake Tapper has called the remarks “shameful.”
Speaking Thursday at a press conference in North Dakota, Trump said his initial remarks tying the Clintons to Foster’s death was merely speculation offered on a whim after a reporter asked him about it.
“A question was asked of me,” he said. “What do you think about Vince Foster? I really know nothing about the Vince Foster situation and I haven’t known anything about it. Somebody asked me the question the other day and I said that a lot of people are very skeptical as to what happened and how he died. I know nothing about it.”
Pressed on whether it was an issue he’d raise again, Trump said he wouldn’t — unless new information were uncovered.
“I think it’s something that frankly unless some evidence to the contrary on what I’ve seen comes up, I don’t think it’s something that shouldn’t be a part of the campaign,” Trump said.
“But again — if you people reveal something to me I’ll answer it.”
The businessman has repeatedly dredged up some of the most stinging and embarrassing moments from the Clintons's past to attack Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton.
He has accused her of enabling Bill Clinton’s infidelities, and has used the voices of women who have accused Bill Clinton of sexual assault in a campaign ad.
