No sitting US president has ever visited Hiroshima, the site of the first use of nuclear weapons, out of concern that such a trip might be interpreted as an apology. The bombing killed 140,000 people but has been viewed by many Americans as a necessary evil to end World War II and save the lives of US troops. Today, however, there is growing sentiment inside the White House that President Obama, who in his first year envisioned a world without nuclear weapons, should cap his final year with a grand symbolic gesture in service of a goal that remains well out of reach. No final decision has been made, but aides have begun exploring the possibility of Obama spending several hours in Hiroshima in May, after attending the Group of Seven Summit in Ise-Shima, halfway between Tokyo and Hiroshima.
And the apology tour continues. The Japanese having the ethical and principled culture that they do, might even be a little embarrassed for us if Mr. Obama decides to apologize for our use of a weapon that brought about the end of the Second World War. The idea that we should apologize for taking an action that inarguably saved hundreds of thousands of lives and staved off a necessary invasion of the island nation of Japan is ridiculous in every capacity. It would be tantamount to apologizing to al Qaeda after 9/11. The Japanese were ruthless and unmerciful during WWII. My Father fought in that theater and the pictures he took are sobering, to say the least. If any nation should apologize for actions taken during WWII it should be Japan. That said - and I know this comes as no surprise to anyone with a brain, Mr. Obama continues to be an embarrassment to the nation.
