Morocco has thwarted an Islamic State terrorist plot to carry out a chemical weapons attack, The Independent reported Moroccan authorities as saying.

Ten suspects were arrested one day before they were to carry out a suicide attack when police raided a safe house on Thursday, Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) Director Abdelhak Khiame told the press.

“They were well equipped to commit a major attack” Khiame told Moroccan outlet Medias 24.

Six jars of sulphur-containing chemical fertilizer were seized from the safehouse along with chemicals which can create the tetanus toxin, according to BCIJ. Four machine guns along with tear gas and ammunition were also seized.

Police also found an ISIS flag.

Police believe that the weapons seized were from Libya, but that the terrorists were trained in Morocco by ISIS. Khiame said this “reveals a radical change in Daesh tactics.”

If the attack had gone ahead it is thought there would have been dozens of casualties at a minimum.
