Betsy McCaughey: GOP Now Must Take Trump Seriously

Donald Trump's victory in the New Hampshire primary Tuesday will "force the GOP to deal with him as a legitimate candidate, which he is," former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey told Newsmax TV.

"There are four other candidates bunched together in the number two spot," McCaughey told host J.D. Hayworth on the "Newsmax TV 2016 New Hampshire Primary Special" in an interview. "As long as that continue, at least those four candidates will go on."

She expects those other candidates to be Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Chris Christie.

"As long as there are at least four other candidates vying with him, he will remain the very big leader," McCaughey told Hayworth. "It's going to be more challenging when one or two of those candidates drop out, because it will be harder for him to hold on to a lead with only 35 percent.

"Right now, this is a huge win for him. It sets him up to run the table until the other candidates drop out. He deserves it.

"Americans are angry and he's expressing their frustration," McCaughey said. "They want somebody who's not part of the political establishment.

Exactly right!

Trump absolutely crushed his opposition in New Hampshire.   But, can he win in areas that have large numbers of social Conservatives?  He came close, but no cigar in Iowa.  We are about to find out in South Carolina.  I believe the winner of South Carolina will be the GOP nominee and it is looking like a showdown between Trump and Cruz.  With a fifth place finish in Florida, Rubio looks finished.  Jeb?  in fourth, looks marginally better.  I don't see Kasich going anywhere.

I wonder how well Trump will do in states with significant Hispanic populations... that have open primaries.

That said, I don't think many Democrats will play an 'Operation Chaos' this time around, as a protest vote is now better spent on Bernie Sanders to stop Hillary.

Yeah, Betsy. Americans seem to want somebody who has sucked the political establishment dry for his entire professional life.

They won't. The German term for where they live [in English] is "Cloud-Cuckoo land". The peasants aren't allowed to revolt.

I tink we will find out real soon since Texas is one of those states and there is really nothing on the Democrat side to keep them from doing exactly as you suggest.

Betsy McCaughey is only relevant because she came out as one of the most vocal critics of Obamacare. Now she's out there supporting a guy who wants a universal compulsory health care system.

I guess that's all we can expect from the lady who in 1998, ditched the Republican Party and ran a laughable campaign against her own incumbent governor (she was lieutenant governor of New York) on the LIBERAL party line.
