By Devin Henry - 01/19/16 01:35 PM EST

The governor of ethanol-rich Iowa says voters there should reject Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz over his position on the federal renewable fuel mandate.

Speaking with with reporters Tuesday at the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit, Gov. Terry Branstad (R) said voters should oppose Cruz when they turn out to caucus next month, calling him the “biggest opponent of renewable fuels” in the presidential race.

“He’s heavily financed by Big Oil,” Branstad said, according to the Des Moines Register. “So we think once Iowans realize that fact, they might find other things attractive but he could be very damaging to our state.”

Cruz "hasn’t supported renewable fuels, and I think it would be a big mistake for Iowa to support him,” he added. Asked whether he wanted to see Cruz defeated, Branstad said “yes.”

Wow, the highly respected Governor of Iowa just stated that "Ted Cruz must be defeated." Big shoker! People do not like Ted.

Cruz has come under fire for his position on the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which mandates the amount of ethanol refiners mix into their gasoline supply.

The Texas senator says he backs a five-year phase-out of the standard, though in the past he has supported measures to immediately end the RFS.

“I do believe there should be a gradual phase-out because there has been investment-based expectations,” Cruz said earlier this month.

“The lobbyists are trying the best they can to snooker the people of Iowa and convince the people of Iowa that a government mandate is the only way for ethanol to survive. The problem is, the government is blocking ethanol. They are trying to convince you the mandate is the best way to go.”

The mandate has strong support in Iowa, the nation’s leading ethanol producer. Since Congress instituted the RFS, every Iowa caucuswinner on both sides of the aisle has supported the mandate.

Cruz is in a tight race in Iowa with businessman Donald Trump, who supports the mandate. Both are courting the same demographic of voter in the Hawkeye State, and Trump officials say the mandate could prove a tie-breaker with voters there.

Iowa will probably vote democrat in November, like they did in 2000, 2008 and 2012.

The republican party better watch what they are doing or they are going to have a revolt on their hands, the likes of which they may not overcome.

Trump has far higher negatives than Cruz.

Disappointing about the Iowa governor.  That is up to Iowans to sort out.  So far, it looks like they disagree with their governor on this.

Yea! you know they disagree with their GOV? Possible but PROVE it? Or are we just suppose to take your word for it or your OPINE? :silly:

Cruz is high enough in the Iowa polls to make the claim that at least many disagree with their governor.  He is either first or second, depending on who you ask.  If the Gov. was not worried, he would not have bothered singling Cruz out.
Again your OPINE or word, WHERE is the PROOF they disagree with their GOV? :patriot:

In 2000, W was an ethanol man.  I do not know about McCain and Romney, but likely neither appealed to the more conservative Iowans.  They voted Huckabee and Santorum in those primaries.  I do not remember who they voted for in the 2000 Republican primary.
Iowa voted for Bush in their 2000 GOP primary, then for Gore in the general.

Some good it did to win the primary. My point again.

It'll be interesting to see how Republicans in Iowa react to this...

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad urged Republicans not to vote for Cruz because of the latter's opposition to ethanol tax subsidies; most reports have ignored that his son, Eric, is a propagandist for the ethanol industry.  The crony capitalists have enormous power, including in the governor's mansion.  It'll be interesting to see how Republicans in Iowa react to this.

Fun Fact:

Terry Branstad has been Governor of Iowa since 1983. He served four terms, Democrats took his place, then he came back in 2010 riding the anti-Democrat wave after years of Tom Vilsack and Chet Culver running the state. He has been Governor more than 20 years and has an establishment stink to him. If this is as much of an antiestablishment year as it is, Branstad's non-endorsement is only going to help.

Even more fun fact: Branstad's last primary opponent, in 2014, was Tom Hoefling. Yes, that Tom Hoefling.

And more moderate Branstadt beat ultra-conservative-born-again-purist Hoefling, 83% to 17%

Would you all believe I met Hoefling at our GOP meet when he was running a couple of years ago? Nice guy, but no clue.

I don't know how many will follow the gov on this one. Maybe 50/50. People are tired of subsides and mandates.

Ethanol is a dead horse. Other tech is coming along to supplant it.

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad says voting for Ted Cruz would be a 'big mistake'

Iowa's governor hopes Ted Cruz shucks off.

Terry Branstad admitted Tuesday that he'd like to see Cruz defeated because the Texas senator opposes the Renewable Fuel Standard, which mandates the amount of biofuels — including corn-based ethanol — that refineries are required to mix into their gasoline supply.

"He is the biggest opponent of renewable fuels," Branstad told reporters at the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit, according to the Des Moines Register.

Cruz's leading opponent, real estate mogul Donald Trump, rushed to support Branstad — and criticize Cruz — in a spelling-challenged tweet.

"Wow, the highly respected Governor of Iowa just stated that 'Ted Cruz must be defeated,'" Trump wrote. "Big shoker! People do not like Ted."
