ICE Screens Inmates at Fresno County Jail - Over 120 Deported

This summer Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims implemented a new program designed to help the federal government to deport illegal immigrants who have violent criminal records..

In an unprecedented move, she's allowing immigration and customs enforcement agents - or ICE - access to the Fresno County Jail.

The move is controversial, ground breaking and - according to the Sheriff - effect in removing violent criminals - who are in the country illegally. The timing of her program, has captured national attention - because of the recent murder of Kate Steinle in San Francisco.

She was killed allegedly by an illegal immigrant with a long criminal history, the very type of criminal that Fresno County's program is designed to help screen out and deport.

Tonight in an Eyewitness News Special Report, we'll show you how Fresno County's approach is becoming more popular and even spreading to other counties. We also talk to the Steinle family and those who are opposed to the Sheriff's program.

Took a small peek at the Sherrif.

Margaret Mims has been a peace officer since January l980. She was elected to the office of Sheriff in November, 2006, becoming the 25th person to hold that office in Fresno County. She was the first female deputy sheriff Sergeant to supervise field patrol units. She was the first female deputy sheriff to attain the rank of Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Sheriff, and to be elected to the office of Sheriff in the history of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office which was established in 1856.

Margaret is a member of the Fresno Cultural Arts Rotary Club, the Caruthers Kiwanis Club and is on the Board of Directors of the Marjoree Mason Center, a local women's shelter. She has served as a past member of the Fresno County Rape Counseling Service Board of Directors. She is a member of the California Peace Officers' Association, the California State Sheriffs' Association, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Talented cop. Good person.

Deport?  So they can turn around and come back in?  Sounds like 'release' to me...

San Francisco County voted OUT of office by a wide margin, two to one, the Sheriff that defended the policy which led to the murder there, and which kicked off Trump's campaign.

You know what they say: The definition of a conservative, is a liberal that has been mugged.

SOME of the appeal of Trump, is the knack of making things "real" for ordinary people, without getting stuck in the partisan game.

We debate on at great length if he is or is not a conservative, etc.

Meanwhile he tells it like it is in San Francisco and the sheriff get thrown from office, by a two to one margin.

I am more a pragmatist, and less a dogmatic idealogue, so the attraction of Trump is coming into focus for me. I currently prefer him, to Carson.
