The Establishment Thinks the Unthinkable: Trump Could Win the Nomination
By Eliana Johnson — October 19, 2015

It began as whispers in hushed corners: Could it ever happen? And now, just three months from the Iowa caucuses, members of the Republican establishment are starting to give voice to an increasingly common belief that Donald Trump, once dismissed as joke, a carnival barker, and a circus freak, might very well win the nomination.

“Trump is a serious player for the nomination at this time,” says Ed Rollins, who served as the national campaign director for Reagan’s 1984 reelection and as campaign chairman for Mike Huckabee in  2008.

Rollins is not alone in his views. “Trump has sustained a lead for longer than there are days left” before voting begins in Iowa, says Steve Schmidt, who managed John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign. “For a long time,” Schmidt says, “you were talking to people in Washington, and there was a belief that there was an expiration date to this, as if there’s some secret group of people who have the ability to control the process.”

But for Trump, a dip in the polls after the second debate that many predicted was the beginning of the end has arrested; and for nearly four months, he has remained at the top of the polls. Now, long-time GOP strategists who were expecting Trump’s act to wear thin a couple of months ago worry that he can’t be stopped, or at least that he has a significant chance of winning the nomination.

When I read that Trump is the only candidate other then Bush actively working to get on the VA ballot, I realized he is serious about going the distance.

In June I was one of the 60% that said I would never vote for Trump. In the latest Fox Poll it is down to 18% "I will never vote for Trump". Meanwhile Jeb Bush has went up to 22% in the "I will never vote for" category in the Fox News poll.

The establishment has themselves to blame for Trump. While I don't think it was intentional, the establishment couldn't have planned to create an environment for Trump any better than they have. The GOPe seems to be a big fan of nominating whoever was next in line. And the nominees were severely lacking. So, we get a radical leftist president, because the Democrats have successfully branded the GOP as old, irrelevant, the party of rich old white guys. Once the radical leftist is re-elected, the backlash begins and the House and Senate have been given to the GOP. What was done with it? Nothing.

Republican voters feel betrayed, and without representation. Trump gives them a feeling that he'll do what he says, something almost no one else on the GOP side seems able to do.

I think Trump is terribly flawed, and would prefer someone else as president. But I'm enjoying this for now. It's delicious to watch the GOPe thrash and cry.

Doesn't appear Trump's a flash in the pan as the oddsmakers had it. So, yes, it's possible Trump could win nomination. Nearest is Carson and questions still remain whether he can step up his game to challenge Trump's lead.

As I have said plenty of times before, if the GOP is stupid enough to nominate Trump for the general election, I will vote for him, because I am a team player and not a fair weather friend who refuses to vote for anyone other than my peculiar favorite, but I will do so resigned to the fact that by doing this the GOP will have handed the White House to Clinton (or Biden) with a big red bow on it, and all but guaranteed its minority status for another 12 to 20 years.

Pretty interesting...I could write that exact paragraph exactly the same...except for one word, where "Trump" appears replace with "Bush" and that's exactly how I think.
