After WWII, jets were beginning to take a broader place in aviation and the general thinking was that because planes were flying so much faster, air to air combat would be a thing of the past.
During the early years of Vietnam, our aviation losses were very high so the Air Force developed Red Flag to reintroduce air to air combat training which reduce our aviation losses.
