What would you do? School orders student to remove shirt honoring fallen soldiers or go home

Student ShirtAn Oregon student was sent home from school for a shirt he wore honoring fallen soldiers because it had a gun on it.

The principal of Dexter McCarty Middle School in Gresham told the eighth grader, Alan Holmes, that he would either have to remove the shirt or go home. Holmes chose the latter, and his father came to get him.

“They won’t let me wear a shirt that supports the people that keep us free, I’m not gonna support them,” the young man said.

“I was nervous and kind of heartbroken,” Holmes told KPTV. “Because I feel like I should be able to support the troops who died for us.”

Holmes’ parents support his decision to not remove the shirt which read “‘Standing for Those Who Stood for Us,” in part because their other son was in the Marines.

“I’m proud of him,” his father, Charles said. “I would’ve stood up for the same thing. I mean, I would’ve done the same thing.”

The school told KPTV they couldn’t comment because of confidentiality issues but they stand by the decision as they believe weapons on a shirt are inappropriate.

Holmes told KPTV he plans on doing a research project to learn more about the soldier memorial depicted on his shirt in his spare time.

Unless there is an enforced strict dress code (such as may be the case at Catholic schools), I'd wear the shirt, refuse to leave the premises and let the sorry administrators call law enforcement.  Yep.

The courts have consistently held that unless dress is likely to disrupt the learning environment, then schools can't regulate it.  I doubt anyone was planning to riot because of the shirt and the school has opened itself to a legal challenge.

This is one way they will take our guns. first make it evil to even have a photo of one on anything. Ban a kid for having a poptart shaped like a gun. TV shows will now be anti-gun.  Guns are evil, guns are bad will be all over the place now more than ever.

If this had happened when I was a kid, I would have gone home and let my parents handle it.  And handle it - they would - especially my mother!  She had more than one confrontation with school teachers and administrators and they usually ended up apologizing.

One thing, she almost always sided with them when I was disciplined (usually paddled) for something I shouldn't have done.  But other times, when the discipline was for something someone else did, or uncalled for - she fought it tooth and nail.

The problem as I see it these days is that parents either don't care or they are afraid.

When I was in 5th grade they pulled me from class because I was wearing pants. When my mom got to the school she was pissed off at the school.
