DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) — Violent extremists who are killing children and others in Iraq, Syria, Nigeria and other parts of the world may cite Islam as a justification, but the West should be careful about calling them Islamic radicals, Secretary of State John Kerry told an audience of opinion leaders Friday at the World Economic Forum.

In a speech calling for a global effort against violent extremism, Kerry said it would be a mistake to link Islam to criminal conduct rooted in alienation, poverty, thrill-seeking and other factors.

“We have to keep our heads,” Kerry said. “The biggest error we could make would be to blame Muslims for crimes…that their faith utterly rejects,” he added.

“We will certainly not defeat our foes by vilifying potential partners,” the top U.S. diplomat said. “We may very well fuel the very fires that we want to put out.”

Kerry’s comments highlighted a rhetorical division between the U.S. and its closest allies. French President Francois Hollande told the same audience earlier Friday that Islamic extremism is a problem that must be opposed. On Thursday, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond stood next to Kerry and urged the defeat of what he called “the scourge of violent Islamist extremism.”

The Obama administration has come under criticism for its unwillingness to differentiate between Islamic extremism and other forms of extremist violence.

Earlier this week, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat from Hawaii and Iraq war veteran, said it was a “bipartisan concern” that Obama and his top aides don’t use the term “Islamic extremism.”

Kerry at Davos: Don’t Blame Muslims for Crimes Not Committed by Muslims Alone

By Aaron Goldstein on 1.24.15 | 2:33AM

Here is an excerpt from John Kerry's speech to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland:

Against this enemy, we are increasingly organizing and fighting back, but in doing so we have to also keep our heads. Obviously, the biggest error that we could make would be to blame Muslims collectively for crimes not committed by Muslims alone – crimes that the overwhelming majority of Muslims oppose, crimes that their faith utterly rejects, and that Muslim leaders themselves have the greatest ability to address.

Religions don’t require adherence to raze villages and blow up people. It’s individuals with a distorted and an even ignorant interpretation of religion who do that, abetted by networks of individuals who have a different agenda and who incite and finance those actions. And we will certainly not defeat our foes by vilifying potential partners or by suppressing the very freedoms that terrorists try to destroy. Unless we direct our energies in the right direction, we may very well fuel the very fires that we want to put out.

Blaming Muslims collectively for crimes not committed by Muslims alone?

What the hell is Kerry talking about? Is he suggesting that Presbyterians were involved in 9/11? Are Methodists to blame for the Boston Marathon Bombings? Were Hindus responsible for the Charlie Hebdo attacks? There may be circumstances where acts of, as Kerry puts it, "violent extremism" is carried out by people other than Muslims. But apart from Muslims what other religious or ideological entity is committing acts of "violent extremism" on a global level?

And in what way are we villifying potential partners? Who exactly are these potential partners? Are they nation states like Iran and Turkey? Or are there specific Muslim leaders or movements Kerry has in mind such as the "largely secular" Muslim Brotherhood? It can't be Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Arab states that Kerry is worried about alienating. They're already alienated with the Obama Administration when they propped up Hamas during the Israel-Gaza conflict last summer never mind the secret negotiations with Iran.

It seems to me that the Obama Administration has fuelled plenty of fires all on its own.
