Baker Refuses to Bake Cake with “Anti-Gay” Message for Christian – Christian Sues

By Onan Coca   / 24 January 2015   / 7 Comments

The founder of a non-denominational Christian organization, Bill Jack, recently walked into a Denver bakery and requested that the owner bake him a cake shaped as a Bible with a message written on it that said “God hates Gays”. He also requested an image of two men holding hands with an “X” over the image.

The owner of the bakery, Marjorie Silva, who says that she too is a Christian, refused to make the cake. "After I read it, I was like 'No way,'" Silva said. "'We're not doing this. This is just very discriminatory and hateful.'"

Now Jack has filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights division claiming that he was discriminated against for his religious beliefs.

"I believe I was discriminated against by the bakery based on my creed. As a result, I filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights division. Out of respect for the process, I will wait for the director to release his findings before making further comments."

Silva says Jack’s claim is ridiculous because, "It's unfair that he's accusing me of discriminating when I think he was the one that is discriminating.”

Look, I totally get what Mr. Jack is doing here. I would just never go about it in the same manner. “God hates Gays?” Really? Is this the message we want people to see when we argue that our freedom of religion is being trampled?

I don’t think so.

Instead, if Mr. Jack felt that his was something he just had to do, he should have chosen a bakery owned by a homosexual and asked them to bake a cake with a verse printed on the cake. The verse would of course need to be something explicitly denouncing homosexual acts – like Leviticus 20:13 "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them."

refuse serviceWhen his request for a cake is denied… then he could argue that his religious beliefs had led to the bakery discriminating against him.

However, I have bigger problems with this in general. Shouldn’t how we fight this battle count almost as much as the reason we are fighting? I don’t think bakers should ever be sued for refusing to do business with a customer. That is the whole basis of the free market system – we are free to choose whether or not to participate in trade. The moment the government steps in and forces one side or the other to participate (like forcing a baker to bake a cake – or forcing a customer to buy insurance) the market is no longer FREE.

A gay baker should be able to refuse to make my Christian cake and I should be able to refuse to make a cake for a gay wedding. That’s freedom.

Suing them to prove a point just seems small and may not have the desired effect. What if Colorado says that yes, he was discriminated against. Now instead of promoting freedom, Mr. Jack has simply helped to ingrain the idea into government that they can force businesses to do business whether or not they want to. And just like that… the free market is dead.

I get wanting to do this… but I just don’t think it was a good idea.

Onan... that seems like an appropriate name.    :silly:

This should be interesting.  The gov't will have to tie itself in knots to get around this one.  I wonder if there was any collusion?
