According to multiple security experts, North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-un are not responsible for the Sony hack.
This counters claims by the FBI that North Korea was definitely behind the attack.
President Obama also attacked the country in a press conference Friday, saying that America would retaliate in response to North Korea’s actions.
Kim Jong-un followed Obama’s press conference by denying North Korean involvement in the attack.
Now numerous security experts are attacking the FBI’s finding of North Korea as the culprit.
Marc Rogers, one of the world’s foremost authorities on hacking and director of security operations for DEF CON, the world’s largest hacker conference, has laid out the reasons why he believes North Korea is not responsible in an article on the Daily Beast.
Rogers attacks the claim by the FBI that the malware used in this attack is similar to the malware used by North Korea in other attacks, and thus North Korea must be the hacker in the Sony case.
Rogers says he and many security experts do not even believe that North Korea was involved in those other attacks and, even if it was, it would not constitute definitive proof that North Korea was involved in this case.
Rogers also attacks the conclusion by the FBI that the IP addresses used imply North Korea as the hacker, since North Korea used them previously in other attacks. On the contrary, he writes, those IP addresses are used by all kinds of hackers, making it unlikely that North Korea is the hacker in the Sony case.
The security experts’ research points them to an insider at Sony – a woman named Lena who claims to be a member of the hacking group Guardians of Peace.
What do you think? Is North Korea responsible, as the FBI claims, or is some other group or person responsible?
