 House moves on Ebola funding

After briefings this week, House Republicans signed off Thursday on the release of $700 million more in funding requested by the Obama administration in support of fighting the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Together with the $50 million already approved, that gives the green light to about three-quarters of the $1.06 billion sought by the Defense Department, which has taken the lead for the U.S. in providing hospital equipment, personnel and airlift capacity.

“The world is facing a severe global health crisis emanating from West Africa,” said Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.), who chairs the House defense appropriations panel with jurisdiction over the funds. “The United States is stepping up to lead the international response to the Ebola outbreak, and Congress will ensure that the president’s request is fully and quickly funded.”

“The Obama administration has now provided the outlines of a plan execution — its goals, cost and timeline,” Frelinghuysen added. “While questions remain, and while we remain committed to rigorous ongoing oversight as the mission evolves, yesterday’s briefing has satisfied our initial request for information — including by setting out a 180-day plan for DOD deployment.”

“My subcommittee has serious concerns about the safety and security of service members who have and will deploy to Liberia. We have no greater obligation than to ensure their well-being while they act on our behalf.”
