'Mohammed' the most common name in Oslo

The Islamic name not merely the most frequently given to male newborns, but the most common among all men

"Mohammed" has become the most common name in the capital of Norway, rather than merely the name most frequently given to male newborns, local media reported citing the population census.

Oslo has already appeared among European capitals where the Islamic name was reported to top the popularity charts among baby boys. Other cities on the list included London, Brussels, Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

4801 individuals in Oslo are named Mohammed. The most popular name among Norwegians outside the capital is reportedly Filip.

The name's popularity reflects the high birth rate in the Muslim community as well as immigration from Arab countries, statisticians say.

In recent years Norway has seen a surge in Islamophobia, with its far-right "Stop Islamization of Norway" organization reportedly the largest such group on the continent.

Many linked the trend to the 2011 round of atrocities perpetrated in 2011 by Anders Behring Breivik, who shot to death 69 people, mostly teenagers, at a left-wing Workers' Youth League (AUF) camp on the island of Utøya. He killed eight others by setting up a blast in an Oslo government building.
