A recent battle between Mexican authorities and a cartel in the popular Mexican resort town of Puerto Penasco, also known as Rocky Point, involved Blackhawk helicopter gunships, according to the Mexican government.The operatioin was reportedly aimed at a Sinaloa cartel lieutenant named Gonzalo Inzunza, also known as “El Macho Prieto.” Five bodies have reportedly been recovered, yet the body of Inzunza was reportedly taken by surviving cartel members. Authorities still believe he was killed or injured in the attack.As with most news events involving Mexican cartels, determining exactly what occurred is difficult, as information is often attributed to unnamed sources in either the Mexican government or other anonymous officials. This is likely due to the fear of retribution from the cartels.Fronteras relates that the attacks occurred before dawn and involved cartel bodyguards with .50-caliber rifles. They reported a tunnel was found behind the cartel lieutenant’s hot tub and that this tunnel was used to remove his body.Tucson News Now reported gunfire and the sound of an explosion. They stated the ordeal began after three SUVs did not stop at a checkpoint operated by Mexican authorities and ended with federal police and military members engaging in a shootout in an upscale resort in Rocky Point.Immediately following the attack, the U.S. State Department issued a security message to U.S. citizens traveling to the area. They mentioned reports of the attack and warned: In the event of gunfire, take shelter immediately and stay clear of doors and windows. Additionally, you should review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
