It would not have been pleasant. Cal was a powerful steel tycoon who would have pressed charges for diamond theft. Jack was a homeless man with no marketable skills beyond drawing french women. He would have taken a brutal job in a factory and probably gotten drafted into WWI. Rose would suddenly be thrust into poverty with no birth control, an estranged and stuck up chihuahua for a mother, and few prospects of her own.
If they made it 10 years without killing one another, it might turn out ok.
