Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont is calling for an immediate pause on the installation of new automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras and surveillance technology across his state — acknowledging what The Georgia Record has been reporting aggressively for months: municipalities are deploying mass surveillance infrastructure on American citizens without informed consent, without clear privacy protections, and without accountability.

In a letter delivered August 7, 2026 to the Connecticut Police Officers Standards and Training Council, Lamont requested that within 30 days the council develop binding guidance for local and state police departments on the use of surveillance cameras and ALPRs — including what data is collected, how long it is stored, who has access to it, and under what conditions it can be shared.

"I am in agreement with the many residents across Connecticut who are seeing this technology being implemented by their towns and are wondering what types of privacy protections are being implemented for ordinary people who are just going about their lives," Lamont said. "We must have clear policies in place regarding what is happening with this data, who has access to it, and how it can be used."

The governor is urging all municipalities to immediately pause installation of any new cameras and ALPRs until the guidance is finalized.

A free open-source website called DeFlock now lets drivers route around automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras as a surveillance company prepares to add Bluetooth device-tracking to the same roadside hardware.

DeFlock, built by developer Will Freeman and backed by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), crowdsources ALPR camera locations nationwide and maps roughly half of Flock Safety’s roughly 100,000-camera network.

Users enter a start and destination, select an avoidance buffer between 50 and 500 feet, and receive a privacy-optimized route.
