139th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron Builds Arctic Patient Movement Capability for Future High-North Operations

The 139th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron is developing a dedicated Arctic aeromedical evacuation capability as the U.S. military and its allies prepare for increased operations across the High North.

The effort focuses on training Air Force aeromedical evacuation crews to operate in extreme cold, validate medical equipment in Arctic conditions, integrate with allied partners, and move injured or ill personnel from remote locations to higher levels of care.

“The Arctic is not simply a colder version of the battlefield,” said Lt. Col. Jeff Burns, a flight nurse with the 139th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. “In this environment, the cold, distance, darkness, weather, and isolation become operational threats. If we are going to save lives there, we have to be trained, equipped, and mentally prepared before the emergency happens.”

The Department of Defense’s 2024 Arctic Strategy states that the region is undergoing rapid physical and strategic change, with increased activity by Russia and the People’s Republic of China creating new security challenges for the United States and its allies. The strategy directs the department to preserve the Arctic as a secure and stable region where the U.S. homeland is defended and vital national interests are safeguarded.

I would say more troop movement in the Arctic is a sure bet.

Arctic conditions are like being on another planet, and if you aren't set up for that, you're going to have problems.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
