A senior Defense Department official marked the anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party’s military arm with a speech in Beijing Tuesday, declaring the U.S.-China military relationship to be “stronger than it has been in years.”

Deputy Assistant Defense Secretary Alvaro Smith spoke at a ceremony in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing to mark the 99th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Liberation Army.

“We seek a decent peace, fair trade and respectful relations with China,” said Mr. Smith, who is in charge of China, Taiwan and Mongolia policy. His remarks were posted online by the Pentagon.

The conciliatory comments were made despite mounting tensions with China and what many analysts say is Beijing’s low-level warfare against the U.S.

...  On Tuesday, Alvaro Smith, deputy assistant defense secretary for China, Taiwan and Mongolia, told an audience at the Chinese Embassy in Washington that communication between the two militaries is “stronger than it has been in years.”

Smith spoke at an event marking the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese army.

“Under the leadership of Secretary Hegseth, we are actively repairing a once broken military-to-military channel and making clear, steady progress,” he said, according to a transcript posted online by the Pentagon. The United States does not seek conflict with China and wants a peaceful and respectful bilateral relationship, Smith added.

“The department has embraced a new approach to our military relationship — one built on candid, respectful, clear conversations with genuine interest in de-escalation, while continuing to advance our nation’s priorities,” he said. “This is how two powerful militaries should engage, and over the last year and a half, we made this a reality.”

Chinese Ambassador to the U.S. Xie Feng also welcomed the recent improvement in relations but warned that significant disagreements remain. ...
