JENNY JOHNSTON meets the NHS nurse who has finally cleared her name two years after being suspended for inadvertantly calling a violent, racist, trans paedophile 'Mister'

Just over a year ago, when Jennifer Melle was at rock bottom, her eldest daughter – a nurse, just like her mum – placed a six-week-old puppy in her arms. She hoped that having another life to care for would bring her mother back.
'She could see me crying, spending all the time in bed. If I went outside, I was having panic attacks, in the supermarket, on the bus, in the street. She wanted me to be happy again,' says Jennifer.
A devout Christian, Jennifer, 42, called the little cockapoo Esther, a good biblical name, and they have been inseparable ever since.
'Esther has been a beam of light, a big part of my recovery,' she says of the dog who coaxed her into daily walks. 'She's brought a lot of joy. Thanks to her, I have life again.'
As heartwarming as this is, it is also shocking to discover that a woman like Jennifer – a senior nurse who had raised three children single-handedly while holding down the most demanding of jobs – needed to be reminded of who she was.
And that it was her children, rather than her employers, who provided the front-line support when she was in 'trauma' (she uses the word several times) is shameful.
