Nearly 12 hours after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a 26-year-old father in Maine, the Department of Homeland Security finally responded, claiming the man was “an illegal alien” shot after attempting to “flee the scene” in his vehicle.
At 6:40 p.m. ET Monday, DHS acknowledged the deadly shooting on X and said an ICE officer “fearing for public safety” shot a the man driving the vehicle around 7 a.m. ET while “conducting targeted surveillance” on an undocumented immigrant’s last known address
The man, identified as Joan Sebastian Guerrero, is a Colombian native who had been living in the coastal city of Biddeford, Maine, with an authorized work visa and Social Security number, according to Maine Immigrants Rights, a local immigration advocacy group.
Protesters in the area have reacted with devastation and anger, holding vigils and demanding accountability from DHS.
