How Trump wrapped up Iran

Trump exercised pure Article II authority as commander-in-chief. Democrats hate it.

Monty L. Donohew | May 3, 2026

President Donald J. Trump didn’t ask permission to enter the Iran conflict decisively when required, and he didn’t ask for permission to exit it on American terms.  On May 1, 2026, he sent a blunt letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate president pro tempore Chuck Grassley declaring that the hostilities with Iran “have terminated.”  Citing the April 7 ceasefire he enforced, now extended indefinitely, and the total absence of any exchange of fire since then, Trump slammed the War Powers Resolution clock shut at the 60-day mark.  No new authorization needed.  Mission accomplished.  Game over.

Once again, Trump exercised raw American leadership — the kind the swamp and the media have spent years trying to neuter.  Democrats howled.  Chuck Schumer, in one of his more intellectual critiques, called it “BS.”  Jeanne Shaheen and the usual suspects whined that U.S. forces remain “in harm’s way.”

Theatrics aside, Trump exercised pure Article II authority as commander in chief.  The 1973 War Powers Resolution, a post-Vietnam power grab passed over Nixon’s veto, has always been a constitutional joke.  Every serious president from both parties has treated it as advisory at best.  Trump simply refused to let a dusty statute paralyze decisive action against a regime that threatened our troops, our allies, and the global energy supply.  He notified Congress, delivered results, and ended the active phase on America’s timeline.  That’s constitutional order restored.

Compare this to the bipartisan forever-war machine that bled America dry for two decades.  Nation-building, endless sanctions, proxy quagmires — all of it produced nothing but body bags and trillion-dollar deficits.  Trump’s Iran operation was the opposite: Identify the threat, strike hard, achieve the objective, declare victory, and come home.  No boots on the ground in some endless occupation.  No nation-building fantasy.  Just strength through results.

Iran is now offering peace proposals on America’s terms.  Trump isn’t rushing to their table, embracing realism and Reagan-style decisiveness dedicated to America First priorities.  The alternative was perpetual half-measures that emboldened Tehran and drained our treasury.
