FRANKLIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Mercersburg Borough Council requested the resignation of Water Authority Chairman Ed Twine and a reworking of the authority during its Monday night meeting.

It came as residents poured into James Buchanan Middle School, hot with anger over allegations last week from Chief Mark Sanders that the authority told MMP&W Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Company it could not use fire hydrants in the borough during a response.

Instead, Sanders said he was told to “let the building burn.”

A fire was lit under a Franklin County fire chief after being told by a local water authority that the fire company could no longer use the borough’s hydrants and just “let the building burn.”

MMP&W Volunteer Fire & Ambulance Company Fire Chief Mark Sanders and the Mercersburg Water Authority are currently working on solutions, which include incoming upgrades to the Mercersburg Borough’s old water system.

During a barn fire this week in Montgomery Township that resulted in the building being destroyed and several animals dying, firefighters had to use hydrants within the borough due to draft sites being frozen. MMP&W says they got a call from the water authority the next day and were told that the water system could no longer support fire department operations.
