The media goes 180 on the Epstein files

If it’s not about Donald Trump, there’s no story.

J.R. Dunn | February 11, 2026

It seems that the Left is finally coming together on how to handle the Epstein files, thanks in large part to the Atlantic. (As an aside, the mag’s owner Laurene Powell Jobs was photographed lounging in a bathing suit beside Ghislaine Maxwell.)

Leftists really thought they had Donald Trump with those files. In a clear case of projection, they took it for granted that Trump would behave exactly the way they would under the same circumstances. But now their desperation is palpable. The other day, AT got an email from some nitwit who wanted us to get excited over Trump being “mentioned over 5,000 times in the Epstein files.” Well, 5,000 is not a lot in files amounting to several million pages. And it’s clear enough that these “mentions” are along the lines of “Trump saw a cat in a tree one week, and Epstein saw a cat in a tree a week later.” It could be five thousand, or 500 million, and it makes no difference if it’s all on that level.

We can be sure that’s all it is, because if it wasn’t, if there was one passage that was the least ambiguous, the leftist media would have homed in on it like a formation of enraged hornets. But this material is in fact taking down people named Clinton and Chomsky, which is not to the Left’s liking.  It’s a mammoth own goal, made when they’re already down double digits on the scoreboard.

So here comes the venerable Atlantic to straighten things out, in the person of Senior Editor Gilad Edelman:

[These] assumptions are widely held – but poorly substantiated… The notion that Epstein routinely trafficked teen girls to other men aboard the Lolita Express is widely accepted as fact… But the accusations that led to his initial criminal conviction were specific to Epstein himself. The notion of other abusers arose later…

Edelman goes on to lay the blame on the conveniently dead Virginia Giuffre, though the discussion about Epstein’s doings was already in full swing well before she came forward. He also calls on that old reliable, antisemitism, before at last settling on the true culprits. You guessed it: Donald Trump and MAGA. “This was all a natural fit for the MAGA right, some of whom already believed that Trump was sent by God to expose pedophiles.” (Actually, I’ve always believed that he was sent by God to destroy the Left.)

He mentions that Trump “was president when Epstein died in federal custody.” (Presidents, as we know, hold the keys to federal lockup in New York.) and “enjoyed a well-publicized friendship” with Epstein. (No mention that Trump booted him out of Mar-a-Lago for hitting up underage girls.)
