Trump's tariffs could cost households $1,300 in 2026: Tax Foundation
The levies threaten to offset gains from new tax cuts, analysis finds
President Trump defended his trade policy in a recent WSJ op-ed
(NewsNation) — President Donald Trump’s tariffs haven’t triggered soaring inflation the way many once feared, but a new analysis shows Americans are still bearing a significant cost.
Research from the nonpartisan Tax Foundation found Trump’s tariffs amounted to an average tax increase of $1,000 per U.S. household in 2025.
That cost is set to rise to $1,300 per household in 2026 if the policies stay in place, the research group estimated.
The findings come as affordability remains a top concern for Americans, with polls showing more people souring on the president’s handling of the economy.
Trump has stood by his signature trade policy, crediting tariffs with creating “an American economic miracle,” in a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed. He decried critics who predicted the tariffs would hurt the stock market and spike inflation, pointing to stock market highs, strong economic growth and announced investments in America.
“We have proven, decisively, that, properly applied, tariffs do not hurt growth — they promote growth and greatness, just as I said all along,” the president wrote.
Part of the reason the worst fears haven’t materialized is that Trump’s tariff strategy shifted repeatedly throughout the year — rolled out, paused, expanded and scaled back — blunting the full impact economists once expected.
