Rep. Byron Donalds blasts Democrats on immigration, calls for end to Senate filibuster U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, a Florida Republican and the Trump-endorsed gubernatorial candidate, slammed Democratic officials for opposing federal immigration enforcement Friday, accusing them of undermining the Constitution and fueling organized chaos for political gain.
Appearing on Florida’s Voice Radio, Donalds described actions by Democratic governors and mayors as “despicable” and akin to “nullification of the Constitution.” He specifically targeted Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, calling Frey “a clown and a leftist.”
“Governors do not have the legal authority to oppose federal immigration officers when they are upholding the law,” Donalds said. “They don’t have that authority because the Constitution is very clear: Immigration and Naturalization are enumerated powers […] granted to the federal government.”The interview focused on recent protests and disruptions targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE agents, which Donalds portrayed as coordinated efforts by agitators. He contrasted the situation in Democratic-led states with Republican ones like Florida, Texas and Tennessee, where he said governors are cooperating with federal authorities.
“This chaos always happens when Republicans are in charge,” Donalds said. “Then the Democrats bring out their front groups, with their agitating tactics.”
Donalds praised Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for his handling of immigration issues, noting the state’s cooperation with federal law enforcement and arrests of about 35,000 undocumented immigrants. He recently spoke at a Florida Sheriffs’ Association conference, where he emphasized maintaining the state’s approach.
The congressman also highlighted former President Barack Obama’s deportation policies, saying Obama deported millions without similar unrest. “Barack Obama was talking about how it was appropriate to follow the law and deport illegal aliens,” Donalds said. “That wasn’t me 15 years ago saying it […] that was Barack Obama saying it. He sounded like a moderate Republican 15 years ago.”..............
