Defunding Homeland Security Is the Wrong Response

Luis Gonzalez for The Last Wire.

Recent shootings in Minneapolis involving federal immigration agents demand scrutiny and full investigation. The deaths are tragic. The federal government will investigate every incident. Accountability is essential. Justice must be served.

Some lawmakers are threatening to block funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Their reason? Protest and local resistance to ICE operations. This is wrong. Funding DHS cannot depend on whether a city or governor likes its mission. Federal law is not optional.

States and cities may refuse to help enforce immigration laws. They may adopt sanctuary policies. That does not suspend the federal government’s duty. ICE and other DHS agencies must be able to operate. Lives depend on it. Federal agents cannot do their job if Congress withholds funds because of political disagreements.

Withholding funds because of local defiance is dangerous. It allows a governor or city council to veto federal law. That is not leadership. That is abdication. It sets a precedent where any locality can hold the nation hostage.

DHS does more than enforce immigration law. It protects critical infrastructure. It responds to disasters. It secures borders. It protects Americans. Defunding the department undermines all of these missions. Communities hit by storms or attacks cannot wait for politicians to resolve disputes. FEMA funding and other essential programs flow through DHS. Every delay puts citizens at risk.

Lawmakers can and should demand accountability. They can review policies and training. They can investigate incidents thoroughly. But they cannot hold the entire department hostage. That punishes the public, not those responsible for mistakes.

Congress must fund DHS fully. ICE and all federal law enforcement agencies must receive the resources they need. The rule of law cannot be held hostage to protest or politics. Americans expect their government to enforce the law. They expect it to act decisively. Defunding DHS because some local officials object is not just wrong. It is dangerous. It is a threat to public safety and the rule of law.

Democrats have no problem holding the public hostage.  The more pain, the better for them!
I don’t owe tolerance to people who disagree with my existence.
I will NOT comply.

If we give in to the tantrums now, every time they disagree with any policy, there will be another tantrum.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
